Artist statement:

I have been exploring the use of harmonious contrasts in color, texture and form. Each wall sculpture is an assemblage of a variety of hard woods. Copper, steel and acrylic paintings are also incorporated into some of the sculptures.

Considerable time is spent composing the basic form. Working alone, I build a piece using a large assortment of tools to shape and texture various components. Any given piece may have surfaces that are sanded smooth or carved, burned, hammered or colored.

Next, an accent piece of copper or steel is added. I work with a variety of acids and oxides to create a patina finish on the metal, experimenting with a lot of different methods to create the various patterns. Some of this process is random and some of it I can control. Because it is a chemical reaction taking place on the metal, a patina can take anywhere from a few hours to several days to develop.

The challenge is to come up with a piece that invites the hand and the eye to enjoy the experience, and the mind to smile. And, like a desert canyon, to invite you to explore the hidden beauty within.
